Originally from New Hampshire, Dr. Byers relocated to Omaha, Nebraska, in 2011. Soon after, he became Nebraska’s first veterinarian board-certified in both emergency and critical care medicine and small animal internal medicine. Consequently, he joined a small group of veterinarians nationwide with this rare dual specialty distinction.
Clinical Career in Veterinary Specialty Medicine
Dr. Byers began his specialty career in Omaha at Midwest Veterinary Specialty Hospital (MVSH). At that time, Kansas State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine operated the hospital. In 2015, the hospital transitioned into VCA MidWest Veterinary Referral & Emergency Center. During this transition, Dr. Byers served as Medical Director from 2015 to 2019.
After several years focused on teleconsulting, continuing education, and academic writing, Dr. Byers returned to full-time clinical practice in September 2024. Since then, he has continued to provide advanced specialty care for critically ill and medically complex dogs and cats.
Veterinary Leadership, Education, and Publishing
In addition to his clinical role, Dr. Byers holds certification as a Certified Veterinary Journalist (CVJ) and remains an internationally respected educator. For example, he serves as Co-Editor of Feline Emergency & Critical Care Medicine. Moreover, he has authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and veterinary textbook chapters.
