Dr. Christopher G. Byers, DVM, DACVECC, DACVIM (SAIM), CVJ is a board-certified veterinary specialist in emergency and critical care medicine and small animal internal medicine. Based in Omaha, Nebraska, Dr. Byers provides advanced veterinary care for dogs and cats while also serving as an international educator, author, and speaker for the veterinary community.
Education & Training
Dr. Byers earned his Bachelor of Science in Animal Sciences as a University Honors Scholar at Colorado State University and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Cornell University. Originally from New Hampshire, he relocated to Omaha in 2011 and became Nebraska’s first board-certified veterinary emergency and critical care specialist and small animal internal medicine specialist.
Clinical Career
Dr. Byers began his Omaha career at Midwest Veterinary Specialty Hospital (MVSH), operated by Kansas State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. In 2015, MVSH transitioned into VCA MidWest Veterinary Referral & Emergency Center, where he served as Medical Director (2015–2019). After several years in veterinary teleconsulting and continuing education, he rejoined VCA MidWest full-time in September 2024, continuing his mission to provide expert veterinary specialty care.
Veterinary Leadership & Education
Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Byers is a certified veterinary journalist (CVJ) and respected educator. He is the Co-Editor of the textbook Feline Emergency & Critical Care Medicine and has authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and textbook chapters. A sought-after international speaker, he delivers continuing education (CE) lectures and workshops for veterinarians and veterinary technicians around the world.
